What is Purpose, and how does it help you?

Purpose – A word that you hear more often these days. Is it going to become the next buzzword?

But what does it really mean, and how does it help you and your business?

Let’s take a closer look. First we have to check the definition of the word “Purpose”.

The Definition

Here are some descriptions I found:

  • Desired result, end, aim, or goal
  • the reason for which something exists, is done, made or used
  • something set up as an object or end to be attained = Intention
  • the object toward which one strives
  • an anticipated outcome that guides your planned actions
  • Resolution
  • Determination

Though now as we have a definition, we could take a closer look. Purpose is an end result for with you are determined to achieve.

In other words, you are motivated to achieve the goal you set as it is extremely appealing to you.

Now, when you take a look at the use of the word “Purpose” in business, you will find that there is a tendency to equate it with sustainability.

Well, sustainability could be a purpose, but it is not the definition of the word. Here, purpose comes in as a higher goal.

In the past, business was all about profits. Well, from my point of view it’s still about profits but not only about it anymore. There comes a new layer into business management.

A business needs profits, period. Making profits isn’t a great purpose for a business. It’s not really appealing to employees, and it feels somewhat empty.

Adding the layer of a higher goal a business is supporting could be very motivating. This higher goal could be preventing pollution, helping to educate people, or any other thing that helps all on the planet.

However, just talking about having a purpose does not make it happen. Remember that purpose is the end result that you set for yourself to achieve.

Any goal you have requires actions in the direction of achieving it. As of the aforesaid, we are basically talking about setting a high goal for your business.

This goal must be serving a higher intention than just generating profits. Making Profits still is adequate, and the Profits might be even higher, when the higher goal is appealing to your customers either. Who knows?

Finding the Purpose of your Business

Every business has a purpose, though you need to ask yourself what is the purpose of my business.

Thus, the purpose is a high intention and serves as many people as possible while still being precise.

Just ask yourself over and over again, “What is the purpose of my business? What am I aiming for?”. Write down all your answers. Then check which answers have the strongest energy / feeling to them.

That’s how your higher goal shows itself. It will definitely be a short sentence. If it is long, you think too much about it and that’s not it.

The higher goal is something you feel is propelling your motivation to a higher level. This motivation helps you to even go through tough times.

Of course, you could and should use the higher goal you serve with your business in the communication with your customers.

But your actions must stand behind it, otherwise it will become an empty statement and everyone could notice it.
